Re salary 2 questions 1) Is that base or with bonuses ,etc. Obv if its violating a nda , no worries. 2) i know you have no current financial need to, but are you still doing side projects for pay/fun/growth. Ie new tech or ppl that just know you can get it done and seek you out.

I’ve been in ops for over 20 years and moved to CE (Azure 😉) for the last 4. Worked for every size company. The one constant with everywhere I’ve worked is lack of upfront planning. Most solutions are management induced duct tape and baling wire. “Get it up and worry about it later.” This is true with self hosted or cloud. The nice thing about cloud is it has just about everything most companies need native. If you don’t need it don’t use it, but it’s there if you do. I think where companies get into trouble is when they don’t have a clear vision on what they’re going to do and just deploy a ton of cloud infrastructure because they think they need it and it’s “easy” to deploy. This leads to a ton of waste and large bills. Also this toxic trend of the hot new tech is burning VC money with high test gas. For example purchasing the hot new (insert expensive 3rd party software here) because someone wrote an article about it and you don’t use or need most (if any) of the features it offers to get the job done. It’s sad because this type of thinking can result in real world consequences (layoffs). Cloud isn’t a silver bullet, but it’s pretty darn nice. 😊

That's a very good point! I'm a Data analyst working my way to Azure Data engineering, which I still think is going to be there for a while, but going to the deeper ground layers might be even more stable and perennial. Is pivoting toward Azure Administration would be a good first step?

It's relatively easy to avoid cloud vendor lock-in: use mostly open-source products on cloud, or products implementing some well-known standards. E.g. virtually every cloud allows running software like MongoDB, Cassandra, MySQL, PostgreSQL, minio or minio-compatible cloud storage, Kubernetes, ElasticSearch, Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, Tensorflow, PyTorch, Auth0, JWT, Airflow, ... At the same time avoid products that don't have wire-compatible equivalents on other clouds (e.g. AWS ECS, AWS Lambda, AWS DynamoDB, AWS CodeBuild, ...). This is all you need to write almost any application! Also be suspicious about price tag: AWS ECS is initially cheaper than AWS EKS, AWS DynamoDB is initially cheaper than open-source MongoDB or Cassandra, AWS Workflows is initially cheaper than open-source Airflow. It's all because AWS wants you to make addicted to their proprietary technologies, just like drinking beer is initially cheaper than maintaining a healthy diet.

So does it mean that elasticity comes with low latency? How fast it can scale the resources depending on the traffic?
